Media miss the story again: Historic Pro-troop Movement surges on war anniversary Iraq War unique in its sustained pushback against warmed-over Vietnam-styled protesters This Photo is of a pro-troops supporter in San Francisco, another site where patriots are striking back. Like a good western movie, the good guys won. But most coverage still misses the bigger story of Saturday's anti-war temper tantrum and the push back from veterans, troops, and Americans who arrived from as far away as Hawaii. The Gathering of Eagles, the name given to the 30,000-strong crowd of pro-troop supporters on Saturday, was the largest showing of red-blooded patriots during this war. Thousands have carried the torch since March 19, 2003, the first days of the war in Iraq. This war is unique in its sturdy crew of Americans who won't let the left overpower the debate via its anti-American antics, cruel anti-troop words, and even attacks on our American GIs. Every American war including the Revolutionary War has suffered its protestors, most famously during Vietnam when actress and leftist activist Jane Fonda led the pacifists and the appeasers with her anti-American behavior that earned her the name "Hanoi Jane." During the Civil War, anti-war protestors called the Peace Democrats, or Copperheads, challenged President Abraham Lincoln's presidency in a manner not unfamiliar to the present day attacks on President Bush, who has been steadfast in protecting the United States from its enemies. During the Civil War, as casualties mounted and the Confederacy won battles, protests increased. Today's anti-war protestors also use body counts, fake cemeteries, and twisted statistics to taint the debate. The Iraq War is the first war in which Americans have consistently countered anti-war rhetoric and actions. The Gulf War was over so quickly that neither anti-war protestors nor troop supporters got a strong toehold. The new media and talk radio have changed the debate. The Gathering of Eagles was so successful because thousands of people went to the Web for information. The lefties failed miserably on Saturday. Jane Fonda was a no-show after claiming she would no longer remain quiet on this war. The "global warming" was apparently too much for her and the thousands of others who stayed home as their critics showed up in staggering numbers. The patriots just stacked on layers of clothes to protect against the bitter cold. Coverage on Saturday and Sunday barely mentioned the patriots who descended on D.C. to protect our monuments for fallen soldiers. Some anti-war protestors promised to bring spray paint and desecrate the memorials. Anti-war protestors had already spray painted the Capitol steps in another one of their extreme displays of misery and self-hatred. But thousands of pro-troops folks made sure the memorials were protected. Sadly, some leftists felt safe enough in their gaggle of goons to burn the American Flag. Human Events reporter Jack Langer saw one instance and reported on it. And these people say they're patriots? They need to use their Webster's dictionary and look up the meaning. If they look under the "D's" in the same dictionary, they might recognize their descriptions under "deviants." Thousands of patriots held Old Glory and encircled the war memorials, standing between the deviants and the symbols of our nation's pride in our fallen warriors. Move America Forward, led by chairman Melanie Morgan, started a caravan in San Francisco that collected about 15,000 flags for the flag city. The American flags flew proudly in the hands of patriots and signaled an end to the leftist lies that "most" Americans don't support our troops and their mission. MAF will send the flags to our warriors serving overseas. And on Monday, the fourth anniversary of the war in Iraq, at least one media outlet's tune changed. FOX news - whose early coverage was disappointedly focused on the anti-war, pro-vegan, pro-socialist, pro-abortion marchers - reported that the pro-troop crowd outnumbered the antiwar group 3 to 1. "The media have a template that the American people have turned against the war . . . and that's wrong," Kristinn Taylor, spokesman for the Gathering of Eagles, told FOX news. I have worked with the mainstream media for almost 20 years and they do have biases and templates that lean to the left. It had traditionally been difficult to break through their stranglehold on information, but the Web and talk radio have changed that. Michelle Malkin, Move America Forward and others reported straight from the ground and posted video and pictures at their sites showing something very different than what appeared in the press. Malkin and others report that the Gathering of Eagles had a showing of 30,000, according to an unofficial count by the Park Service. Antiwar groups argue that they had a huge turnout. But even the mainstream media, which align themselves with the leftwing, report that Cindy Sheehan's groupies didn't come close to their 100,000-dream number. What is clear from the signs and noise they were making, the anti-war crowd was clearly more vulgar and hateful. While groups can argue indefinitely about numbers, what is clear about Saturday's events is that Sheehan and others have "misunderestimated" American patriotism- as President Bush might say. The bigger story is that history has never given the sustained pushback against anti-war forces that is roaring now. Men and women on Harleys, young and older veterans, ladies and gentlemen put the left on notice: You may scream louder, but patriots have more soul. The Gathering of Eagles will not sit down until our troops win in Iraq and come home to our open arms. |
