A showdown between anti-war activists who defaced a Marine recruiting office and flag-carrying patriots took over a street in Berkeley on Wednesday with noise levels that reached a half-mile away at the University of California in town.

Berkeley police officers kept the Code Pink contingent of about 150 separated from the group of about 500 led by Move America Forward, the nation’s largest pro-troop organization. The incidents of abhorrent behavior were rare, but included an anti-war demonstrator trying to knife a pro-troop supporter and two code Pink followers burning flags.

CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin, left, has a face off with Melanie Morgan, local radio personality and founder of Move America Forward. Pro-military demonstrators faced off in downtown Berkeley against CodePink on Wednesday, saying the anti-war group defaced a Marines recruiting center that opened in Berkeley last January.

Red, white, and blue in Berkeley

Reader Dr. Zoo sends photos of the Move America Forward pro-troops rally at the Marine recruiting center in Berkeley. More coming. Wonderful sight to see the Code Pinkos outnumbered and outflagged on “their” turf. Kudos to Melanie Morgan, our vets, and all the supporters who came to counter the recruiter-bashers:

Meanwhile, the city government of Berkeley continues to wage war on the recruitment center:

“It’s very unfortunate that they opened a recruitment office in Berkeley,” said City Councilmember Linda Maio. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for this town. I don’t think it reflects the sentiments of the citizens.”

The City Council plans to voice its disapproval of the center’s mission through its Peace and Justice Commission, which is spearheading a proposal to make Berkeley a sanctuary for officers who choose not to serve in the Iraq conflict, meaning the city would not assist in locating or prosecuting war resisters.

“Berkeley already had resolutions passed in the ‘80s and ‘90s that involved making it a sanctuary for conscientious objectors,” said Commissioner Bob Meola. “The most patriotic thing a person in the U.S. military could do today would be to refuse to fight, because the war in Iraq violates international and U.S. laws, it’s unconstitutional.”

The proposal reaffirms a year-old city resolution in support of Ehren Watada, an Army First Lieutenant who refused to deploy to Iraq may face a court martial.

“There’s a growing number of the military and members of the armed forces who are seeing that the Iraq war is immoral,” said Steve Freedkin, chair of the city commission. “As we saw in Vietnam, when there starts to be a strong opposition in the military, it has a huge impact on public policy.”

Despite the opposition, the center has no plans to relocate, said head recruiter and Marine Capt. Richard Lund.

“I think the vast majority of people understand that my mission of helping college students become Marine Corps officers is not somehow driven by the conflict in Iraq,” he said. “This office was functioning before the war and it will continue to function long after the war.”

Lund said he chose to move the Marine Recruiting Center from its previous location in Alameda in order to be close to UC Berkeley.

National Media to Cover Our Pro-Troop Rally in Berkeley...Will You Be There? PDF E-mail

This e-mail just hit my in-box from Mary Pearson, our Deputy Executive Director at Move America Forward.

Some great news… I just found out that national media outlets are planning on covering the big pro-troop rally to Save the Marine Recruiting Center in Berkeley, CA that takes place tomorrow - Wednesday, October 17th.  We at Move America Forward have also learned from several sources that Code Pink is going to be organizing a counter-rally that denigrates the military and attacks our troops.
Why?

Because they don't want patriotic supporters of our military to be the only story covered by the media. So this is it… the media will be there, the question is WILL YOU?

Are we going to have a great story of a huge crowd on had to show support for our military men and women who are under attack from their own countrymen?  Or are we going to let Code Pink win this battle because we didn't show up?

I'm a 55-year old woman, and the last thing I want to do is stand there alone with my American flag.  But if I have to I will, because I believe so strongly in the tremendous efforts of our wonderful troops.  I appreciate them so much, and I want to show them my love and respect.
 Will you please join me?

For each one of you reading this email, I am sure you can find an excuse or a reason to NOT attend the giant Wednesday pro-troop rally.  But here's the problem:  every time someone does that our crowd size gets smaller.
We will simply hand Code Pink and the anti-military activists a victory if we don't all make the effort to come out - if only for an hour or so. At 12:00 Noon I will be at this location along with any one of you who can make the effort to come.  I will gladly greet each of you warmly with a hug and a handshake, and together we will salute the men and women who keep this nation safe and free.

If you're going to San Francisco, especially next Wednesday, be sure to wear your helmet on your hair. OK, I took some liberties there, but so what?

More to the point, "What" you must be asking yourself, "brings me to caution you thus?"

Let's start at the beginning.
