Berkeley Secedes from the Union--Declares Marines the Enemy

It's war between Code Pink protesters and the pro-troops organization, Move America Forward, after the Berkeley city council declared the Marine Corps to be "unwelcome intruders".

DeMint to Berkeley: Support Our Marines or Lose Federal Funds

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) released the following statement in response to the decision by the City Council of Berkeley, California to evict the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station from the city.

“This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families. The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money. If the city can’t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer funded handouts. I am currently drafting legislation to ensure that American taxpayers aren’t forced to pay for this insult by rescinding all of the earmarks for Berkeley in the Omnibus Appropriations bill, and to transfer the funds to the Marine Corps.”

    UPDATE:

Berkeley City Councilwoman Betty Olds is now 'ASHAMED' of her vote.

The vote to award the Code Pink parking spot was 8-1, and the condemnation resolution was 6-3. On Thursday, the polarized emotions that went into those votes had not abated.

“I’m ashamed of my vote,” said Councilwoman Betty Olds, who helped approve the parking spot but not the condemnation. “The protesters should have free speech - this is where Free Speech was born, after all - but to tell the Marines they are not welcome is shameful. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t even go for the parking spot.”

The Council has been flooded with thousands of calls from all around the country, and patriots shut-down down the e-mail in angry reponse.

    One down, six to go.

"I believe in the Code Pink cause. The Marines don't belong here, they shouldn't have come here, and they should leave," said Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates.

  • American Legion response to Berkeley City Council "Marines Not Welcome"

"Osama bin Laden couldn't have said it better," American Legion National Commander Marty Conatser said of the Berkeley City Council Resolution, which tells the Marines that they are not welcome there. "Disgraceful, disloyal, ungrateful. These words are too kind in describing the actions of the public officials in Berkeley, who voted for this disgrace. Nonetheless, our Marines continue to bravely serve and in so doing, allow Americans to spout such foolishness. The American Legion not only strongly condemns this action by the City Council but also believes that a sincere apology is in order to all Marines, past and present."

  • MARINES ATTACKED IN BERKELEY, CALIF.

    City Calls Marines
    "Unwelcome Intruders"

SAN FRANCISCO – The City of Berkeley, California, has passed two resolutions attacking the United States Marine Corps, calling the Marines "uninvited and unwelcome intruders in the city."

The Berkeley City Council voted to condemn the Marines on Tuesday night (January 29th) as part of a campaign by anti-war activists to shut down a U.S. Marine Recruiting Center located in Berkeley.

The votes by the Berkeley City Council were immediately condemned by Move America Forward (website: www.MoveAmericaForward.org), the nation’s largest grassroots pro-troop organization.

"It is disgraceful that in the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement, anti-military activists would attempt to silence the same military men and women who serve this country and give their lives to protect the free speech rights of all Americans, including these ungrateful and despicable people on the Berkeley City Council," said Melanie Morgan, Chairman of Move America Forward.

The actions by the Berkeley City Council followed continuous protests by Code Pink and other anti-military organizations who vandalized and defaced the U.S. Marine Recruiting Center in September 2007.

One of the two resolutions passed by the Berkeley City Council last night granted a parking spot in front of the Marine Recruiting Center to be used by anti-military activists to harass Marine recruiters. The anti-military activists would not need to apply for a sound permit for the next six months – allowing them free reign to disrupt the day-to-day operations by the Marines.

Move America Forward organized a counter-protest in support of the Marines last October that attracted more than 400 pro-troop supporters who stood in solidarity of the Marine Recruiting Center.

"We have hundreds of thousands of military men and women serving honorably overseas to protect our freedoms. Imagine how they feel when they go to turn on the news and see that they are being stabbed in the back by shameful people here at home, it’s disgraceful!" said Catherine Moy, Executive Director of Move America Forward.

    President – Mitt Romney
John McCain and Rudy Giluliani must be stopped and Governor Romney is the best candidate to do that.

    Proposition 91– Yes
(This more firmly dedicates gasoline sales taxes to transportation projects, instead of siphoning off to general fund for more liberal spending)

    Proposition 92 – No
(This is "ballot box budgeting" at its worst.  It would irresponsibly reduce community college tuition, regardless of need, while permanently increasing taxpayer subsidies.)

    Proposition 93 – No!
(This is phony term limits reform designed to keep Democrat leaders in office longer.  Whether you support term limits or hate them, this proposition is a fraud and it should be defeated. Giving Pistol Packing Don Perata more time in the Senate, as well as extending the reign of corruption plagued Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez is a BAD idea.)

    Proposition 94 - No
The referendum would ratify the compact with the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Mission Indians.  Indian gaming has been terrible for California, Defeating this compact will help solve that problem.  This compact is not the best possible deal that taxpayers can get out of the current Legislature. Union thugs oppose this compact because it does not achieve their goal of forcing casino workers to pay union dues without their consent.  The issue here is union politics, lack of transparency for state inspections of slot machines that quadruple, bringing in Las Vegas style gambling and does not pay for the costs of compulsive gambling or roads needed to handle additional traffic.

    Proposition 95 - No
The referendum would ratify the compact with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. (Same reasons as above.)

    Proposition 96 - No
The referendum would ratify the compact with the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. (Same reasons as above.)

    Proposition 97 - No
The referendum would ratify the compact with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.  (Same reasons as above.)

  • Remember, THE THREAT OF DOMESTIC TERRORISM IS REAL

As the Democrats wrap-up their 'we- need -socialized -medicine -and -tax-rebates now' theme...the threat of terrorism is inkily alive in your city and mine.

And it hits home for those of us here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Congratulations to our law enforcement agents working hard to fight these malevolant forces.

While the President has done many things with which I disagree, GWB is fighting for our safety and security.

  • State of the Union Address--A Final Salute from GWB

Here's what I take away --the Democrats were in full pretense mode to support our troops...standing, applauding when it was appropriate. FOR A CHANGE.

Iraq, and the success of the surge, and the imperative to communicate this to our American public is vital.

(Yes, I know there were other aspects of the speech that need comment, but I'm focused like a laser on Iraq, and I will have full commentary tomorrow morning on my radio show at 560 KSFO Radio, or www.ksfo.com)

These are the words that the President spoke tonight-- delivered straight to my heart:

When we met last year, many said containing the violence was impossible.  A year later, high profile terrorist attacks are down, civilian deaths are down, and sectarian killings are down.

When we met last year, militia extremists -- some armed and trained by Iran -- were wreaking havoc in large areas of Iraq.  A year later, Coalition and Iraqi forces have killed or captured hundreds of militia fighters.  And Iraqis of all backgrounds increasingly realize that defeating these militia fighters is critical to the future of their country.

When we met last year, al Qaida had sanctuaries in many areas of Iraq, and their leaders had just offered American forces safe passage out of the country.  Today, it is al Qaida that is searching for safe passage.

I just recieved the links and the fabulous photos of this determined response to insane idiots who belong in jail (if there wasn't a constitution to protect them and the might of the military to preserve it.)

GOE's Larry Bailey, a Southern Gentlemen who loses patience with the sickos, e-mails his description of what happened.

In response to the pitiful gathering of Westboro Baptist Church miscreants near Camp Lejeune, NC, on 1/26/08, the North Carolina chapter of Gathering of Eagles organized a support-the-troops rally alongside a 300-yard stretch of US 17.

Scores of flags and hand-painted signs adorned the route, and the Eagles stayed at their posts despite a continuing cold drizzle.

The event was supported by various other patriotic organizations, including Eagles Up and various motorcycle clubs.

For three hours, Jacksonville, the host city for Camp Lejeune, rang to the sound of beep-beeps, ah-OOH-gahs, honk-honks, and BLA-A-AAAATs as passing vehicles indicated their approval of the pro-troop message the estimated 250 patriots were putting out. Scores of Marines and their family members actually pulled into the parking lot near the gathering to express their appreciation for what the Eagles were doing.

One of the most memorable was this quote from a Devil Dog: "We just got back from Iraq yesterday, and it's good to see that somebody gives a s__t!"

One Eagle stated, "This was so good, I'd have PAID to be here!" It was a great day for America and for the US military.

From Doug Jernigan, of Carson City Nevada:

"It was a beautiful sight.  8 protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church and 200 bikers from the Patriot Guard Riders.

We were dressed in black leathers and American Flags.  The Sun was bright with snow on the ground and no one saw the protesters.

When they tried to speak we sang the National Anthem.  After about 1 hour they started to leave and we escorted them to their cars.

The Commander of the soldiers' unit came out to thank us for being there.

When I see signs that say "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" and "God Hates You" I get so angry I could scream!
I hope that I don't have to do this again."

    SECOND TAKE:

CNN just reported that Caroline Kennedy is endorsing Obama in the New York Times...her piece is entitled "A President Like My Father" ..saying that her decision is patriotic, personal and political.

The Democrats are beginning to get on-board the Obama Express ..remember, Hillary Clinton and Jackie Kennedy were tighter than twins, swapping notes on how to raise children in the glare of the media. And Caroline herself spent much time with the Clinton's on Martha's Vineyard.

Now the politico.com reports that the Kitty Kat of the Left, Ted Kennedy, is endorsing Obama!

How Bush Decided on the Surge

A year ago, we were losing in Iraq. Then the president made the most momentous decision of his presidency.

By Fred Barnes Weekly Standard 02/04/2008, Volume 013, Issue 20

The date: December 13, 2006. The location: a windowless conference room in the Pentagon known as the Tank. It was an inauspicious place for President Bush to confront the last major obstacle to the most important decision of his second term, perhaps of his entire presidency. And the president chose not to deal with his hosts, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as a commander in chief would address subordinates. He hadn't come to the military brass's turf simply to order the five chiefs and two combatant commanders to begin a "surge" of additional troops in Iraq and to pursue a radical change in strategy. For that, he might have summoned them to the Oval Office or the Situation Room in the basement of the White House. He had come to the Pentagon to persuade and cajole, not command.

The president was in a weak and lonely position.

(Folks, this is a lengthy read but worth the effort. It provides depth and context to the success of the 'surge' that has turned around a failing policy in Iraq.)

  • Fake, But Accurate Quotes from Bill Clinton

"From signing healthcare reform legislation, to working with politicians from across the aisle, to brokering international peace treaties with foreign dignitaries, I goddamn love being president," Clinton said. "For too long has this nation been deprived of a Bill Clinton presidency, and for too long have I been deprived of being president. Now I get to experience all these wonderful things again myself."

"And the applause," Clinton added. "I look forward to the endless roar of applause perhaps most of all."

"Damn, this feels good," Clinton told supporters as he shook hands in Charleston Monday.

     (FreeRepublic.com)

    h/t Michelle Malkin

Bill Clinton became visibly upset Wednesday over comments by a prominent South Carolina Democrat that compared the former president’s actions on the trail to those of infamous Republican strategist Lee Atwater.

In an interview with CNN’s Jessica Yellin, Dick Harpootlian, a former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party and a supporter of Barack Obama, said some of Bill Clinton’s recent remarks on the campaign trail were appeals based on race and gender. He said the comments were meant to “suppresses the vote, demoralize voters, and distort the record,” and said they were “reminiscent of Lee Atwater.”

Clinton sharply disputed the charge, and lashed out at Yellin for raising the question.

“You live for this. This hurts the people of South Carolina,” he said. “Because the people of South Carolina come to these meetings and ask questions about what they care about. And what they care about is not what’s going to be in the news coverage tonight, because you don’t care about it.

“What you care about is this. And the Obama people know that. So they just spin you up on this and you happily go along.

Damn that Bill Clinton! He stole a page from the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy handbook.

When all else fails --Blame The Media. (Because, of course, they deserve it.)

     UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST

1st Lt. Dustin Shumney was a devout Catholic, dedicated officer, family man, and Iraq War hero, who was raised in Benecia, Calif. and played youth football.

His widow Julie, and their three children Jordan, 15; Mallory, 11; Conner, 6 were awarded the Bronze Star with the Combat ‘V’ device on August 4, 2005 as a result of his heroic actions in Fallujah, Iraq while serving as the commander of 2nd platoon, Charlie Company, Battalion Landing Team for Hawaii based 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force.

He led his men fearlessly into Fallujah in November of 2004. Shumney’s confidence, proficiency and warfighting spirit made a positive impact on his platoon's ability to fight.

  • Pat Dollard --THE ONLY GUY IN HOLLYWOOD TO MAKE THE 'DOC' ABOUT IRAQ

"Bleep-holes" like Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, Brian DePalma and others in Hollyweird can't come close to figuring out how to show America what it is like to fight in Iraq...the gut-wrenching things these guys go through..the incredible courage and heroism to fight this war.

Matt Sanchez, a milblogger who spent seven months in Iraq and Afghanistan, has viewed 30 minutes of a documentary by Pat Dollard, who can drink me under the table, and still engage my heart and brain on the single most important issue of our time: the rise of Radical Islam.

Patrick Dollard's Journey From Hollywood to Iraq

The former Hollywood manager Patrick Dollard, center, in Iraq with Pvt. Zachary Kother, left, and Lance Cpl. Eric Cybulski of the Marines.

Matt has the early review here.

"Dollard trumps the pretenders by giving such an engaging view of Iraq, I found myself watching the 30-minute episode half-way out of my seat. The episode showed the Marine response to a major bombing at the Ramadi glass factory. What follows is not just a CNNesque report on raw violence, but a pulsating pictorial of the effects of terror."

  • Dave Burge in '08

Just when I had moused my way to the end of the Internet, I found out a couple of days ago I skipped a blog.

Man, I HATE it when that happens, because as a card-carrying member of the media with over 30 years experience in narcissism and self-idolatry, there is nothing I love better than lording my superior knowledge over everybody else.

    It's a gift.

    Back to what's-his-name for President.

Oh yeah, Dave Burge a.k.a Iowahawk.

He's tossing the old Fedora into the ring and has quite the platform for motivating Americans.

Just a sample from his website that you might enjoy reading (despite the fact that it's not all about ME.)

    ON IMMIGRATION:

"...I have proposed wacky Road-Runner style misdirection signs on the border that read ESTADOS UNIDOS --This Way!"

    FOREIGN POLICY:

"..Ask anyone who knows when sober, Dave Burge has the mature, thoughtful judgement called for in 50-60% of foreign policy situations. These same people will tell you that after 8-10 Jager shots, all bets are off..."

    SOLVING SOCIAL SECURITY:

"Free smokes and tequila for the elderly."

Now I ask you, what more can you want from a Presidential candidate in these troubled times when we are debating the serious issues before millions of non-serious people?

Besides, anyone with the ability to conceptualize as thoughtful response to the outbreak of homicidal maniacs populating our newsrooms of the Media, and come up with the correct solutions has my vote.

I may be late to the Dave Burge in '08 bandwagon, but I was busy ordering my Tequila Sunrise and puffing away on my butt.

Many of us who supported Fred Thompson's campaign with it's splashy New Media debut wondered how a true conservative crashed and burned so painfully.

Was it laziness, as the Old Media storyline kept pushing, incompetence as some insiders suggested, or timing as others speculated?

So Beverly Perlson, with the Band of Mothers, flew into high gear and organized over a dozen Marines to stand-in for him, arms crossed, watching the proceedings carefully.

Mr. Grodner, with his virulent hatred of all things military, didn't count on one thing.

Judge William O'Malley is a former Marine.

  • McCain Wins South Carolina...

...and that really depresses me. He's not right with the base on illegal immigration, taxes, campaign finance and other issues.

I've been e-mailing all my conservative buddies around the country tonight, and they've been saying it's not over, far from it.

But Mark Levin passes along this NRO piece from Michael Graham, a talk show host in Boston who is my friend, as well as my traveling companion to Iraq in 2005, but more importantly is from South Carolina (he was also a political consultant during his Carolina days.)

"...tell me again how McCain is winning?

As I predicted here at NRO, John McCain came out on top in South Carolina by getting the same 1/3rd of the vote in the Palmetto State that he got in New Hampshire and Michigan. But did he "win?"

In 2000, running against George W. Bush and the entire Carroll Campbell machine in South Carolina, John McCain got 42% of the vote, and 240,000 votes out of 573,000 or so cast.

Tonight, he got 33% of the vote in a field where his top challengers—Romney and Giuliani—aren't even running, and 135,000 actual votes. If just the same people who voted for McCain in 2000 had voted for him today, he would have won 50+% of the South Carolina vote. That would have been truly impressive.

Instead, John McCain LOST the support of 100,000 people—and he's the winner?

    McCain had the same "success" in New Hampshire (McCain, 2000: 48%, 116,000 votes; McCain 2008: 37%, 89,000 votes) and Michigan (2000: 50%, 600,000 votes; 2008: 30%, 257,000 votes).

Yes, overall participation in the GOP primaries is down this year—a fact that should concern Republicans regardless of who they choose as their nominee. But that doesn't mitigate McCain's overall weakness. In fact, as the one person who's run for president before and who is touted as a crossover candidate with broad appeal, his slice of the electoral pie should have MORE impact as the number of challengers rises and the number of voters declines.

McCain is a weak candidate by any measure. Only once in his two presidential races has John McCain ever won a majority of the vote, and that was Michigan in 2000. He has yet to crack 40% of the vote this year, and he's done even worse among self-identified Republicans (as opposed to independents and crossover Democrats).

If you really want to see McCain's weakness, however, try this thought experiment:
It's October, 2008. America's economy is in a recession. People are demanding change and new ideas, someone to give them optimism and hope on domestic issues. On stage, facing off in their final presidential debate to discuss jobs, economic policy and hope for the future are John McCain and Barack Obama.

And be sure to imagine how it will look on television, and to people who don't really follow politics (they are, after all, the swing voters who will pick the next president).

Now, tell me again how any Republican won tonight...?"

Enraged by the story of a young Marine Iraq veteran, (now re-deployed) whose car was deliberately keyed by a leftist loony lawyer, Beverly Pearlson of Chicago took action.

  • MoveOn.org threatens Congress, War Supporters

Any member of Congress who supports our troops, their mission and standing firm with President Bush in fighting Islamic terrorists has been threatened with reprisal from MoveOn.org, the leading anti-war group in the country.

    Be afraid. Very afraid.

    NOT.

MoveOn: Anitwar movement still vital, focused

Posted by Matthew Hay Brown on January 18, 2008 12:33 PM

    Tribune’s The Swamp Blog

A day after the Politico outlined details of a tactical retreat by a dispirited antiwar movement, the executive director of MoveOn.org today unveiled what he called “an aggressive new campaign to bring our troops home as soon as possible.”

“More Americans than ever oppose the war,” Eli Pariser wrote in a message on the Huffington Post circulated by MoveOn. “Yet all the major contenders for the Republican nominations support it, and Congress is unable or unwilling (or both) to take President Bush to task.”

Pariser said MoveOn would pursue a three-pronged strategy. First, he said, the organization will campaign against Republican members of Congress who have supported the war.

“They’ve now cast their lot with President Bush, and it's our job to make sure that they get booted by voters next November,” he said. “And we need to make clear that it's bigger than that: their willingness to give the president the votes he needs to continue the war puts their party into a political death spiral that will doom it for a generation. A growing number of congressional Republicans have already gotten the message and have chosen to retire.”

  • Lefty's Smear Hannity (and me, of course)

    Ha!

I knew I could rely on the whacko crowd to provide the video of my appearance last night on Hannity and Colmes, in order to attack us for denouncing attacks on Senator John McCain.

    It's too funny, really.

Thanks NewsHounds, for providing a Friday afternoon chuckle.

  • Freepers & FredHeads

Check out what the Freepers are saying about my (official) endorsement today of Senator Fred Thompson --it's causing quite a buzz.

Over one hundred blogs have now covered my endorsement of Fred Thompson...but my friend Ron Winter has some news the media isn't covering:

The Vets For Fred organization mounted a major, and by all accounts successful, push to put veteran 'boots on the ground' in South Carolina to work for the Thompson campaign. Reporters acknowledge that Thompson's campaign apparatus is the best in South Carolina as he travels across the state to meet and great in person.

Even the media correspondents who are covering the race don't seem to be all that reliant on the polls.

For instance, the RCP average that puts Thompson behind Mitt Romney moved Fox News political correspondent Carl Cameron to note at 10:33 a.m. Friday, "That's probably not the case!" He noted that while Thompson is putting a major effort into the South Carolina primary, Romney has pulled out of that state and isn't campaigning there at all!

  • Bill O'Reilly plays cop on personal attacks by Talk Radio

I just found a copy of the transcript from my Tuesday night appearance on the Bill O'Reilly show on Fox News Network. Hopefully, I'll grab some video or at least a transcript of my appearance on Hannity and Colmes tonight.

But what's up with Bill? He brought in right and left talk show hosts and tried to pin us down on whether personal attacks in politics are okay.

Bill bloviates that it is not.

I say it depends on which side of the couch you sit on.

    You decide.

  • Anti-War Groups Wave White Flag of Surrender

Mainstream reporters are beginning to report what has been apparent to me for months now --the anti-war movement is failing, crumbling under the tsunami of support for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan AND their missions.

Despite spending 12 million dollars, activist organizations like MoveOn.org and others have flopped in efforts to tie up Congress with Iraq funding measures.

    Meanwhile, the country stayed steady.

Put another way, we win --they lose.

  • Body Armor, Killer Vets, and the New York Times

I did a bunch of interviews today with various radio stations about the slanderous New York Times article labeling our troops as 'killer-vets' returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

I was caught off-guard by a California host who wanted to know why the U.S. government isn't providing proper body armor to our troops.

In response, I cited the great milblogger Michael Yon on this subject. National Review Online has it posted here.

  • New Polling in GOP race

Ugh. My two least favorite candidates are pulling ahead in the GOP race (so far.)

    "Moderate" McCain and "Conservative" Huckabee.

I try to comfort myself with the knowledge that it's the New York Times and CBS, ABC, WaPo, but other national polls are showing pretty much the same trend.

GOP Presidential Nomination CBS News/NY Times McCain 33, Huckabee 18, Giuliani 10, Romney 8, Thompson 8, Paul 5 McCain +15

    GOP Presidential Nomination ABC/Wash Post McCain 28, Huckabee 20, Giuliani 15, Romney 19, Thompson 8, Paul 3 McCain +8
  • The Times v. The Times

On Sunday The New York Timeseditorialized:

Mr. Bush has nothing to show in the way of political progress, which is even more important for ending the war.… Mr. Bush’s troop buildup was sold as a way to buy Iraqi politicians breathing room to finally address the tensions driving sectarian violence, including an equitable division of oil wealth and strategies to bring more Baathists and Sunnis into the Shiite-led government. Those goals have not been met, and the administration has virtually abandoned them.

On Sunday The New York Timesreported:

BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Parliament passed a bill on Saturday that would allow some former officials from Saddam Hussein’s party to fill government positions but would impose a strict ban on others. The legislation is the first of the major so-called political benchmark measures to pass after months of American pressure for progress… President Bush, traveling in Kuwait and Bahrain on Saturday, praised the vote, calling it “an important step toward reconciliation.”

  • George Soros...SO Busted..

The Times of London has the details of how George Soros, the Hungarian immigrant to America who despises all things good about America...pays for anti-American propaganda.

I'm shocked, I tell you SHOCKED.

Okay, not really. Soros has an addiction to paying for 'research' that is anything BUT scientific.

  • Military families, bloggers, pro-troopers furious at NY Times report

Same old story, just a different war.

The New York Times is determined to slander American soldiers by insinuation, and twisting statistics to conform to their ugly story that returning veterans are emotionally unstable, and turn their training on unarmed civilians.

    Frankly, it's just disgusting.

*Ron Winter, author, lecturer, and Marine Vietnam Vet has seen it all before.

But this time, he pivots back on the Slimes at the Times.

    *And from Instapundit.com

PHIL CARTER IS REALLY UNHAPPY with the New York Times vets-as-murderers story. "I've got a one-word verdict on this article and its research: bullshit." (Via Abu Muqawama).

*and from an e-mailer who is damn mad!  (plus original Times piece)

I am sure that your blood boils, as does mine at this
attack against US Veterans. However, there is an even
DEEPER INSULT which can be backed with cold hard
    FACTS!
The NY Times wails about 121 murders committed by
Veterans in 6 years. Yet they neglect to mention the
other 98,605 murders committed during that same time
by NON VETERANS!! Yes, Veterans committed a grand
total of 00.12% of all murders while NON VETERANS
    committed 99.88% of murders!

The NY Times must be publicly exposed and, hopefully
punished, for this blatant insulting attack which
intentionally twists the facts in an effort to stir
public opinion against our brave US Veterans!!

  • The Leader of American Forces in Iraq to Move America Forward

General David Petreaus, Commanding General of Multi-National Forces in Iraq, just sent Debbie Lee of Move America Forward his thanks for supporting our troops.

It's an incredible honor to Debbie, whose son Marc Alan Lee, was the first Navy Seal to lose his life in the fighting in Iraq.

All of us at Move America Forward are deeply touched as well.

    (From Debbie Lee)

I wanted to share the gratitude and thanks from Gen Petraeus for our team!!!!

     (From General Petreaus)

Thanks very much for this, Debbie.  It was wonderful to hear from you and I appreciate the note and kind words.  More importantly, I appreciate all that you have done in support of our troopers.  I'm sorry I missed you while you were in Iraq. I did hear of your son's heroic actions and was very touched and inspired by his story.  He and the others who have served here have done so with enormous skill, determination, initiative, and courage.  Marc and the others who serve here in our country'suniform are the new greatest generation of Americans, and it is an enormous privilege to serve with them.  It is wonderful to see how our country has supported its sons and daughters in uniform.  Thanks again for all that you and your team have done for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.  We are all grateful to each of you -- and I look forward to meeting you one of these days!  Best from Baghdad -- GEN Dave Petraeus

  • Sid 'Vicious' Blumenthal busted for DWI

Newsweek Magazine is reporting that the man who HATES conservatives, the go-to guy for attacking Republicans and talk-show hosts, as well as other media who dared to 'question' Her Hillaryness...got busted for drunk-driving. And speeding. He spent four hours in the drunk tank.

Sid 'Vicious' Blumentahl is working as an unpaid advisor for Mrs. Clinton.

Gotta say, the guy hasn't aged well.

    Maybe it's the booze.

(Warning, Newsweek inserts audio commercial of HRC during the post. Extremely annoying.)

But it's worth a read about Hillary Clinton's lackey, the man most responsible for smearing us during the 1990's.

As her husband has dragged his numerous female play objects before her and has humiliated her on the public stage year after year, she still stays within the marriage.

Hillary seems to take every beating, and yet she appears to "keep on ticking." Does she thrive on this?

How would this affect one's (female) psyche? Judgment as President?

    General perspective?

    Corrales, New Mexico

A swarm of biographers in miners' gear has tried to plumb the inky depths of Hillary Rodham Clinton's warren-riddled psyche. My metaphor is drawn (as Oscar Wilde's prim Miss Prism would say) from the Scranton coalfields, to which came the Welsh family that produced Hillary's harsh, domineering father.

Hillary's feckless, loutish brothers (who are kept at arm's length by her operation) took the brunt of Hugh Rodham's abuse in their genteel but claustrophobic home. Hillary is the barracuda who fought for dominance at their expense. Flashes of that ruthless old family drama have come out repeatedly in this campaign, as when Hillary could barely conceal her sneers at her fellow debaters onstage -- the wimpy, cringing brothers at the dinner table.

  • FRED'S ON FIRE!

Fred 'Red Bull' Thompson arrived on stage tonight in the South Carolina debates on Fox News and banished 'Ambien' Fred Thompson into the sleepy shadows.

And not a moment too late.

The conventional wisdown is that if FDT doesn't make a strong first or second place finish in South Carolina, he's toast, which I mostly agree with.

But tonight he was cogent, funny, sarcastic (which I personally like very much in a candidate) and dead-on with the issues. People are paying close attention now, so all the yak-yak about Fred being lazy, Fred isn't interested in winning, Fred this, Fred that, looks to be more about media insider stuff than his actual campaign.

As a passionate conservative, I must say that most of the candidates tonight acquited themselves well. Except for Crazy Ron Paul. But even he dressed himself in more respectable Republican clothing than past debates.

I was happily shocked when Frank Luntz, the GOP pollster who was conducting live focus group polling during the debate, asked the 28 participants who they had the least interest in going into the televised proceedings. Thompson was number one.

Luntz then asked who actually won the debate, and nearly the entire room raised their hands.

I was particularly gratified that Fox News spent a lot of time questioning the candidates about the American reaction to the Iranian speedboats buzzing our Navy in the Straight of Hormuz, because my column at WorldNetDaily.com on Friday deals with this very issue. If we don't respond to the aggression of the Iranian Navy, we will find ourselves in the same humiliating position as the British, with 14 Naval personnel held hostage.

Thompson's response was something to the effect that if the Iranians mess with our guys, they are going to meet up with the 72 virgins they so adore sooner, rather than later.

    (From MichelleMalkin.com)

    Right on!

I switched off the TV when the candidates began their spin of their own performance, which is never helpful to me in making up my mind.

If the Fred Thompson who appeared on TV tonight is the man who will lead our country into our future, which is alternately bright and scary, then count me among those who are aboard the FredHead Express.

The pollsters are scrambling to explain the huge errors in predicting the outcome on the Democrat primary in New Hampshire yesterday.

Rush Limbaugh, the mega-talker, is urging the polling organizations to launch an immediate investigation, suggesting it's 'possible' that outright voter fraud may have taken place.

    Maybe. Maybe not.

I never bought the premise that she was going to crash and burn. In fact, at 10:03 a.m. yesterday on this very website, I predicted she was going to rise like a Phoenix...

  • A PROMISE MADE, A PROMISE KEPT

Today I surrendered a valuable possession.

A selfish part of me wanted to hold onto a simple silver keepsake because of the powerful emotional connection to it, but the better part of me wanted to give it away as quickly as possible.

At a lunch table overlooking the breathless view of the San Francisco Bay, I took off a bracelet that I have been wearing since Christmas Eve and firmly placed it on the wrist of its rightful owner.

There are no gemstones to adorn it, but it is worth more than gold to its new recipient, the mother of fallen soldier Lance Cpl. Travis Layfield of Hayward, Calif.

    image001.jpg

It first belonged to Sgt. Chavez, a Marine recruiter in San Francisco's Bay Area, who brought 19-year old Lance Cpl Travis Layfield to the brotherhood.

He wore it for two-and-a-half years after his young recruit was killed April 6, 2004, in Ramadi fighting al-Qaida terrorists who desperately tried to defeat our American fighting forces to keep that war torn neighborhood as a stronghold for radical Islamic thugs.

    Ramadi, Iraq

Layfield's name, and the date he was killed in action is etched into the aluminum band, rubbed down by Sgt. Chavez's sweat and sacrifice for his country. Now the print is barely visible to the naked eye.

  • Fred Thompson --written off as political roadkill, resurrected last night

I'm talking, complaining, kvetching and whining this morning about the abysmal political coverage last night --not the usual suspects in the mainstream media, but our friends over at Fox News.

I watched television last night for 3 hours and fifteen minutes, and Fred Thompson's name was mentioned exactly ONCE around 7:54 PST as the guy who tied John McCain for third place in Iowa.

My pal Ron Winter sums it up best in an e-mail to me this morning:

"At the 6 pm newscast last night Fox repeated a RUMOR that Thompson was going to quit if he placed 4th, and release his delegates to McCain.

Thompson had already strongly denied the rumor earlier in the afternoon, which should have put an end to it right there before it ever was aired.

But then they ran it on air again with Mary Matalin once again denying it. What a crock. What the hell is going on at FOX?

20 years in journalism and one of the basic tenets I learned right out of the gate is you NEVER run with a rumor. You need at least two reliable sources to verify it, which then makes it fact, and then you get response.

But rumors are taboo. What gives?

Then, although they had portrayed Thompson as 4th throughout the run-up to the caucus, even though only a fraction of a point separated him and McCain, when Thompson pulls it out over McCain by a similar margin they say he is TIED! If the numbers were reversed you can bet Fox would have said Thompson came in a disappointing 4th and start signaling his demise.

I am really, really disappointed in these guys lately, and frankly, this clumsy and obvious attempts to manipulate the votes are tainting every single commentator who does politics on that station."...Ron

And from David in London who noted that Fox was getting it wrong.

#1. The all night 4 person Fox panel. After Laura Ingraham left, it comprised three in house liberals -- Greta Van Susteren, Susan Estrich and Shepard Smith yakking. But the on-air "interview" with Tom Tancredo was a bizarre disgrace. After asking his opinion about the result and MCCAIN... the three then talked over him and chatted amongst themselves. And when Shep Smith finally shrieks Tom another question about MCCAIN, Tom says he's scary... followed by AUDIBLE gasps from the liberals before Smith interrupts then proceeds to answer his own question. Amazing.
#2. Despite Fred Thompson actually gaining more caucus votes that McCain, their headlines all night flagged a tie for third all night.

  • Watch out Madame Speaker, St. Cindy is coming after ya!

Limping along on her last 15 minutes of fame, St. Cindy Sheehan is gunning for San Fran Nan, the 'most powerful woman in the world.'

Sheehan, whose heroic son Casey died in April of 2004, has become an embittered and discredited anti-war activist (see previous post of her 'Dozens' of fellow travelors protesting against the 'illegal, immoral, unjust war' in Iraq during the Rose Bowl parade.)

Now Sheehan has decided that she has San Francisco values, in her looney candidacy to beat Nancy Pelosi in her district race for re-election.

Cindy Sheehan is from Vacaville, which is about as close ideologically to San Francisco as Alpharetta, Georgia is to New York City.

    Whatever.

  • MAF STAFF BACK FROM IRAQ!

While waiting for NBC, See-BS, and ABC requests for interviews about our trip to Iraq, I am THRILLED to report that Our Move America Forward folks Debbie Lee, Danny Gonzalez, and photographer Mary Pearson are BACK in the good ole' USA after six weeks away from home and family (counting the cross-country trip to rally support for our troops AND their mission!)

Our trip into Kuwait, and then Iraq to deliver our 200,000 Christmas cards, Hanukkah and holiday cards was a SPECTACULAR SUCCESS!

In the next few days, Debbie, Danny and Mary will have reports available at www.moveamericaforward.com

We think it's best if they get a couple of days sleep between now and then --they deserve it!

  • AP: 'Dozens' Show Up for Sheehan Protest at Rose Bowl Parade

It looks like the American public has had just about enough of the anti-war antics of Cindy Sheehan.

Sheehan, whom Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, proclaimed had the 'ultimate moral authority' because she lost her son Casey in Iraq, couldn't even get arrested during today's festivities.

    From the Associated Press:

"Two groups were protesting at the parade. Dozens of war protesters led by "Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan staked out spots across from television cameras, hoisting signs reading "Impeachment is Patriotic." The protesters were booed by parade watchers sitting in the grandstand.

"This is not the occasion for this," said Mary Feichtel, 63, of Florida."

How did a woman with 70 percent recognition ratings in 2004 get so thoroughly dissed in 2007? Not hard to figure out if you read 'American Mourning: The Intimate Story of Two Families Joined by War, Torn by Beliefs.'

  • Let's throw a pity party for Nancy Pelosi, shall we?

Madame Speaker's reign over Congress hasn't quite worked out the way she envisioned when she was elected to her high and mighty post over a year ago.

    HATE IT when that happens.

The media is still missing the big story. It's not the Democrats missteps (although that sure doesn't hurt) but rather it's the organized, energized and well-financed efforts of patriots driving public opinion about the central issue --the war in Iraq.

The Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy is alive and well.

And they are involved in taking back our country from the left.

  • Blackfive.net Drives Report on anti-military lawyer vandalizing departing Iraq soldier's car

     UPDATE!

    Chicago SunTimes on the story.

Watch your blood pressure after clicking onto this story.

Blackfive, the tenacious milbloggers, tracked the reports of a young Sgt. heading back to Iraq whose car was vandalized by an anti-military lawyer in Chicago, who then tried to claim he was persecuted and prosecuted because he's JEWISH.

But it looks like the authorities are going to take this one seriously, even though it wasn't going to play out that way in the beginning.
