Halloween night has always been a really fun time for my entire family. My husband Jack dresses up in costume, and when my kids were younger, we decorated the house with the spookiest stuff imaginable. Hanging corpses, spine-chilling music, and dry iced witches brew on the front porch.

Okay, we still do. Fun habits are hard to break.

Sometimes, we go a bit overboard, and the little ghosts and goblins are too afraid to come to the door --but not their big sisters and brothers.

We used to get hundreds of children from our neighborhood and beyond. Not so much anymore, because parents are too afraid of what might be dropped into the bucket of the trick-or-treaters.

I fervantly hope that our streets and neighborhoods will fill up with the shreiks of fright and delight, and we can return to a time of scary stuff without the REALLY nasty changes that have taken place in our society--needles, poisoned candy, and hospital E.R.'s with sickened children.

Meanwhile, earlier today, volunteers marched into the offices of Move America Forward in Sacramento and packed up another kind of 'goody' --appreciation packages for our troops.

As Thanksgiving grows nearer, I can't help but think of the families of our troops who are separated from their loved ones by thousands of miles, and those who have been killed by the terrorists in Iraq, and the injured who are recuperating here at home.

I recieved an e-mail earlier today from a retired serviceman who asked if I could help in a particularly difficult situation. As Mr.Smith unspooled the details, I nearly went into a state of shock from the news of this tragedy --one of unimaginable dimensions. 

 A young army soldier, John Austin Johnson, was struck by an IED in Iraq (the fifth time he has been hit) suffering terrible injuries. He was flown back to Brook Army Medical Center, where his wife and three children were en route from their home at Fort Bliss in San Antonio to be with him.

During that nightmare drive with the kids in the back, Lisa Johnson was in a fiery car accident that claimed the lives of two of the children, and their oldest, Tyler, is in critical condition and is not expected to live.

But God is still testing their faith.

I just got a call from a BRILLIANT Republican woman friend of mine (who would rather chop her hand off than cast a vote for Hillary Clinton) that Rush Limbaugh was talking about this subject --thinking GOP'ers who happen to be of the female persuasion. El Rushbo was quoting from a great column by Kyle-Anne Shiver at the American Thinker when my name was mentioned.

My teenager just popped into my office, asking my advice about his Halloween outfit for school (shock: asking my advice, more shock: High Schoolers still willing to WEAR costumes.)

The lad thinks that a Doctor's outfit would be cool. Then he switched gears and proposed 'Homework Horror' with swatches of discarded assignments.

But thank goodness he didn't want to show up as a 'gangsta' or mention that 'strippers' would be cool for his female friends.

There's a lot of flailing and floundering around in the Conservative world...with tons of us undecided about who best represents our interests.

Time is growing short. Primaries are set to begin in the New Year.

I've been having some extensive conversations with my youngest son about what it means to be an American, the sacrifices for our freedoms, and why it's important to acknowledge the people who keep us safe in the most generous, wonderful (though imperfect) country in the world.

He gets it. Kinda. (He's still a teenager, after all, but his big brother is going to 'splain it all.)

Because of my children, and the soldiers who keep them from forceful observation of a perverted form of Islam,  I am going to Iraq this Christmas season so that we can share the good wishes and warmth of ordinary Americans who dearly appreciate their sacrifice, success, and efforts half a world away.

I know that many of you feel the same way, although you can't personally be in a war zone to express your sentiments.

But you can help.

Move America Forward is announcing a cross-country tour to rally support for our troops, stopping in 41 cities to collect Christmas and Holiday cards for our service men and women. Will you help? *CodePink sent $600,000 to the families of terrorists in Iraq who have murdered our troops. They sit outside Walter Reed Army Medical Center with mock caskets and disturb the recuperation of our brave soldiers.

 Labor groups made a special effort to turn out their members, with hundreds of workers showing up - among them sign installers, teachers, roofers, nurses, security guards and communication workers.

Sharon Cornu, secretary-treasurer of the Alameda Labor Council, said it would be the first time that seven Bay Area labor councils - San Francisco, Monterey Bay, North Bay, South Bay, San Mateo, Contra Costa and Alameda - worked together to urge members to demonstrate.

But patriots did make an appearance today, even though their numbers were drastically undercounted,  the CodePinkos were vastly overcounted.

Arson suspected in California fires

SANTA ANA, Calif., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Authorities inSouthern California said they believe two of the firesthat recently ravaged the area were intentionallystarted.

Authorities have offered a $150,000 reward for findingthe arsonists believed to be responsible for the Rosafire in Riverside County and the massive SantiagoCanyon fire in Orange County, CBS News reportedFriday.

Two men have been arrested and one other questionedbut authorities wouldn't comment on the suspects.

Officials earlier said the Santiago Canyon Fire hadbeen determined by a task force of federal, state andlocal agencies to have been started by arsonists intwo separate "points of origin."

Orange County Fire Authority Chief Chip Prather saidin a news conference that the fire was set in theperfect spot to inflect maximum damage.

"The persons or persons who did this were eitherexceptionally lucky or they have some knowledge aboutwhere you might want to do the most damage when youset a fire," he said.

"I wonder, frankly, if we didn't have this arsoncaused fire here, how many of our resources we mighthave had available to respond to other parts of thestate."

Things I am seeing here that you won't get on the news back home:

Working with our route clearance teams to sweep the roads for IED's. A few days ago a route clearance team was working hand-in-hand with the Iraqi Army to clear a road. As the road was being cleared, hundreds...yes hundreds of Iraqi citizens came out of their homes to join the Iraqi Army on the road to protect it  after it was being cleared.

3 A,M. on a road in the middle of nowhere, and I watch an Iraqi Tribal Security team manning a checkpoint and aggressively patrolling the road, exposed, easy targets. That's guts.

Now that the Sunni have come over to our side, it's no longer accurate to characterize this as an insurgency. This is Al Qaeda and terrorists that we are fighting, One sure way to tell is the Sunni that Al Qaeda are killing now that the Sunni work with us.   Two weeks ago Al Qaeda suicide bombed a Sunni meeting, killing a three month old baby. They shot a Sunni in the chest, tied his still alive four month old baby to his leg, and threw them both in the river. This is the kind of barbaric terrorism we are fighting, and this is the kind of courage that the Iraqi people are displaying in this fight. An d this is just the good stuff I am allowed to tell you about. When it come to a fight against terrorism, give me one Iraqi over 100 left wing Oak Park liberals any day.

A showdown between anti-war activists who defaced a Marine recruiting office and flag-carrying patriots took over a street in Berkeley on Wednesday with noise levels that reached a half-mile away at the University of California in town.

Berkeley police officers kept the Code Pink contingent of about 150 separated from the group of about 500 led by Move America Forward, the nation’s largest pro-troop organization. The incidents of abhorrent behavior were rare, but included an anti-war demonstrator trying to knife a pro-troop supporter and two code Pink followers burning flags.

I’m planning to go to Ft Bragg to meet him and found out today that there are families who are unable to afford to come. I have offered to cover airfare for a few out of my airline award miles. I’m sure other folks out there have miles and would be willing to use them to book tickets for these families who want to be there when their sons come home but just can’t afford all the expense. The day before the rally, Move America Forward visited with our wounded warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. We brought almost five hundred care packages for the recovering troops.

Just outside the hospital grounds, CodePink (the anti-war far left activists who defaced the Marine Recruiting Center in Berkeley last week) were protesting while these brave men were recuperating.

He insisted he needed nothing-- the 'other guys' on his floor needed our items more than he did.
