"...If you're head-scratching over the latest Capitol Weekly/Probolsky Research Company poll numbers --- showing Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore getting within arm's reach of second-place Carly Fiorina in the US Senate after trailing badly for months -- we may have an explanation. From the actual indepedent pollster who ran the numbers.

Adam Probolsky tells us that this is one of few -- perhaps the only major poll out there -- that has used the candidates' actual ballot description when describing the candidates. So Chuck D from the OC is identifed as "Assemblyman/Military Reservist." And Carly is "Business Executive." Front-runner Tom Campbell is "Economist/Business Educator."

Voters rely on that kind of stuff. No, not the junkies reading a political blog. Real voters with better things to do...with all due respect, dear reader. Chuck D told us the other day that his campaign's internal polls show the same thing when his ballot designation is used.

"A 'business executive' isn't what voters are looking for here," Probolsky told us.

The numbers:

Campbell, 30 percent. Fiorina 17 percent, DeVore, 14 percent. And "unsure" 35 percent.

Team Fiorina discounts the poll, saying there weren't enough Republicans polled.

"While these numbers are inconsistent with every public and private poll taken recently in this race, the one thing that is consistent across all polls is the fact that the biggest winner in them all is 'undecided," said Team Fi's Julie Soderlund.

Team Campbell couldn't help a bit of a gloat noting that according to Fiorina's last expense report, her campaign has spent $230,000 for her HindenBoxer and Demon Sheep videos.

And DeVore's Joshua Trevino said "If she can't beat Tom Campbell, and with all of her money, Carly Fiorina is only tied with Chuck DeVore, she should drop out of the race."

Even pollster Propbolsky said that unless Fiorina starts dropping more cash on advertising "and turns on the switch" she might find herself in trouble soon."
